Mammoth is California's favorite mountain resort, located in Central California on the Eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Mammoth is 525km from Los Angeles and 580km from San Francisco.

The first chairlift at Mammoth opened on Thanksgiving Day in 1955 with lifts lines two to three hours long. Now Mammoth's chairlift system, made up of 28 lifts (nine are high-speed quads) can take 50,000 people per hour up the mountain. The Village Gondola, the newest lift, can take 3,000 people per hour. There are 150 named trails on Mammoth Mountain, the longest, Road Runner, is 3 miles (nearly 5km).

South Lake Tahoe is 319km from San Francisco and 762km from Los Angeles. Seven highways connect the lake with major cities in California and Nevada. From the San Francisco area, the most direct route to South Lake Tahoe is up all-weather Highway 50.
